Client Conduct & Boundaries

Why Boundaries Matter in Massage Therapy

I hold a zero-tolerance policy for any sexual or inappropriate behavior or remarks. Unfortunately, over the years, I’ve experienced boundary violations from both male and female clients. While these situations are always unacceptable, I’ll be honest — when it comes from a male client, it can feel far more intimidating and unsafe.

Because of that, I once stopped accepting male clients entirely while I was living and practicing in Texas. It was a decision made out of self-protection, not discrimination, and it reflected just how serious and uncomfortable those experiences were.

Here in Alabama, I’ve reopened my doors to all clients—but I want to be very clear: any suspicious or inappropriate behavior will immediately end the session, and I am obligated to contact the authorities if necessary.

This policy isn’t rooted in judgment; it exists for my safety, comfort, and peace of mind. It’s about creating an environment where true healing can happen—one grounded in mutual trust and respect.

Why These Boundaries Exist

Massage therapy and bodywork are built on trust and vulnerability. A professional session is not just about the body—it’s about the nervous system, energy, and emotional safety. When a client crosses a line, it shatters that trust and violates the sanctity of the healing space.

Boundaries are not barriers; they are what allow connection to happen safely.

The Reality for Many Therapists

Sadly, my story isn’t unique. Many therapists—especially women—have faced uncomfortable or inappropriate situations that made them question their safety in their own profession. Talking about it openly helps break the silence and reinforces that our work deserves the same respect as any other health profession.

When It’s Necessary to Contact Authorities

If a client behaves in a sexually inappropriate, threatening, or disrespectful way—including verbal comments, suggestive remarks, or any intentional touching of me during a session—the session will end immediately.

In those circumstances, I will contact law enforcement if necessary. This step is not taken impulsively; it’s part of maintaining a safe and ethical practice. Massage therapists, like all professionals, have the right to work in an environment free of harassment and harm.

Crossing boundaries—verbally or physically—is not only unethical but can also constitute sexual harassment or assault under the law. Reporting such behavior helps protect both myself and others in the wellness community. It’s not about anger; it’s about safety, accountability, and respect.

Substance Use

For everyone’s safety and comfort, I ask that clients arrive clear, grounded, and fully present for their session. Massage and CranioSacral Therapy work deeply with the nervous system, and being under the influence of alcohol, psychedelics, opioids, or other mind-altering substances can interfere with both safety and effectiveness.

If you’ve had a drink earlier in the day and feel relaxed but not impaired, that’s completely fine. However, if you intoxicated or under the influence of any substances that affect coordination, awareness, or emotional stability, the session will be canceled and payment forfeited.

This policy isn’t about judgment—it’s about honoring the work, your body, and the healing environment we create together.

A Healing Space for Everyone

While my policy is strict, my intention is open-hearted. I welcome clients of all backgrounds who come to this work with genuine respect and an interest in healing. My goal is always to hold space for peace, renewal, and restoration—for both of us.
