Tipping Etiquette for Independent Massage Therapists

Please understand that this post reflects my personal perspective on tipping. Every therapist has their own view on this, and some may feel strongly that tipping is part of proper etiquette.

From my perspective, I never want tipping to feel like an obligation. My hope is that your massage feels so restorative, caring, and intentional that if you choose to tip, it comes from genuine gratitude, not expectation.

Should You Tip a Solo Massage Therapist?

Tipping is a deeply ingrained part of American service culture, and even in the world of wellness, it’s often a question that comes up. When you’re receiving massage or CranioSacral Therapy from an independent practitioner, it can feel a little unclear what’s appropriate.

If you’re visiting a spa or larger establishment, please do tip your therapist—they rely on gratuities as a significant part of their income. Even though you are paying around $100, it goes mostly to the establishment, not the therapist.

The short answer: Tips are always appreciated and serve as a meaningful way to express gratitude for your session.

A Personal Approach to Tipping

In a spa or franchise, tips often supplement hourly wages. For a small, owner-run practice, pricing already accounts for all expenses—equipment, travel, insurance, continuing education, and more.

So instead of being an expectation, tipping becomes something else entirely: a gesture of gratitude. It’s a way to say, “Thank you, that session really made a difference.”

Your continued support—booking regularly, referring friends, or leaving a kind review—means even more than a monetary tip.

How Much to Tip?

This is completely subjective. There’s no single “right” number—just whatever feels aligned with your experience and budget.

If you’re looking for a general guideline, here’s my personal approach when I receive service work:

  • I consider the person’s time, not just the cost of the service.
  • I usually tip $10 for 30 minutes, $20 for 60 minutes, $30 for 90 minutes, and so on.
  • When it’s exceptional, I will tip extra.

Again, this is simply my own way of honoring someone’s time and effort—it’s not a rule or expectation.

In Short

My prices are designed so you never feeling obligated to tip. But if you ever feel moved to, know that it’s received with deep appreciation. Every act of kindness—monetary or not—supports the heart of a small business.
